Confession Time: I'm a Designer Living a Double Life
You know those moments when someone asks what you do for a living, and you have to take a deep breath before answering? That's me every time. Because saying "I'm a designer" or “I make boring things look interesting” is just the tip of the iceberg.
Here's the thing – I spend my days hopping between two completely different design worlds. Sometimes I'm creating logos and brochures that you can actually hold in your hands (graphic design), and other times I'm building websites that need to work smoothly on every device known to humanity (web design). It's like being fluent in two languages, except instead of French and Spanish, it's "print" and "pixel."
A Day in My Split Design Life
This morning, I was fine-tuning a client's logo, making sure the colours would look gorgeous whether it's on their business cards or embroidered on their team hoodies. Classic graphic design stuff – all about creating something permanent and touchable.
But by afternoon? I'd switched gears completely, wrestling with website layouts that need to look good on everything from the latest iPhone to that ancient Android tablet your uncle refuses to upgrade. (Seriously, how are some of these devices still alive?)
Why I Love This Split Personality
The best part about straddling both worlds? When a client needs their brand to work everywhere, I've got their back. No more awkward moments where your printed materials look like they're from a different company than your website. Because let's be honest – we've all seen examples in the past where it’s obvious there’s too many chef’s in the kitchen so to speak - working with just one person (me for example) means you get consistency all the way through from brand creation to the final details on your website or labels to seal packages.
What I've Learned From Living Both Lives
Here's the real tea: both types of design have taught me things I never expected. Graphic design taught me that sometimes the simplest solution is the strongest (looking at you, overcomplicated gradient logos). Web design taught me that even the prettiest design is useless if it doesn't work properly – kind of like those gorgeous but deadly high heels gathering dust in your wardrobe.
The Plot Twist
Want to know something funny? Each type of design has completely different stress dreams. With graphic design, I wake up worrying about sending something to print with a typo. With web design, it's nightmares about websites breaking on launch day. (Yes, designer anxiety is very specific.)
But you know what? I wouldn't have it any other way. Because whether I'm creating something you can hold in your hands or something you can click through on your phone, it's all about making stuff that works as good as it looks.
And maybe that's the biggest lesson here – good design, whether it's graphic or web, is just about making life a little bit easier and more beautiful for everyone. Drop me a message if you want to work on something special to make your business thrive - hello@littlewinterdesign.com
