The Reality of Working From Home as a Designer: My Multi-Room Office Tour
Let's talk about the glamorous life of a freelance designer, shall we? You know those Instagram posts of perfectly styled home offices with pristine white desks and carefully arranged succulents? Yeah... that's not quite my reality.
The truth is, my 'office' migrates around the house depending on the season, my mood, and most importantly - the temperature. My dedicated office space looking over the garden is lovely in summer, with great natural light for those colour-matching sessions. But come Winter, you'll find me strategically relocating to wherever the heating works best (usually the loft room).
The kitchen table becomes my "Serious Client Meeting" spot during video calls. It has the best backdrop with a massive clock over a fireplace, it’s just so cosy - plus no one needs to see the collection of toys that somehow end up all over my desk despite my best efforts. Even better, being so close to the kettle means unlimited tea supplies, which is essential for those long design sessions.
Then there's what I affectionately call my "Deadline Paradise" - the proper office in the loft. It's where I retreat when I need to focus, surrounded by my creative bits and bobs, with zero distractions (except maybe the random pigeons who like to tap on the window). Though in January, because there’s no thermostat up there, it’s like a sauna up there if the heating is on just a tiny bit - especially where the heat rises so much, so I have to brace myself when I come back downstairs to make a brew as it’s an ice box in comparison.
Of course, there are those days when the house feels too quiet or the car's in the garage, and I'll venture out to my backup office – the local coffee shop. There's something about the gentle buzz of conversation and readily available hot chocolates (and cheeky pastries) that sometimes gets the creative juices flowing.
The funny thing is, I wouldn't have it any other way. Working from home means I can fit my design work around family life, dash downstairs between projects to pop the washing on, school runs and never missing a delivery (though why they always arrive during important client calls remains a mystery).
So here's to my ever-changing office view, to the flexibility of remote working, and to all the other freelancers out there nodding along while reading this, probably wrapped in a blanket with a cup of tea. We might not have the Instagram-perfect setup, but we've got something better – freedom, flexibility and heating bills that remind us to work extra fast in winter!
